'Stop taking life so damn seriously' - note to self this week...
This week I was asking myself: how can our fabulous Inti-Mate website be more authentic?
Pink is fabulous. I love pink. Let’s add more pink.
Then, as what always seems to happen, what other people might think cropped up:
I’d got myself into a feminist, politically correct, gender-identification-flavoured tangle about having a little pink on the website.
As raving feminist and sexuality professional, it’s something I am super conscious of; gender fluidity and the effect that the patriarchy has had on all sexes is a hot and important topic.
But, taking a breath, the message is clear.
We have a right to identify and be whoever the fuck we want to be.
Labels have a bad rep.
How many times have we heard ‘don’t label me’? But at the end of the day, they should be used to help communicate what we love to do, with a mutual understanding that they are subjective.
After all, what is pink for me may in fact be salmon for you.
The latest spring issue of Psychologies magazine nudged me towards pondering Martha Roberts, creator of The Colour File. This blog about the delicious world of colour highlights that in the early 20th century, the generally accepted rule was that pink was for boys, and it wasn’t until the 1950’s, when sailor suits and clothes dye became more widely available, that blue took precedence for boys.
Of course, there’s a geeky bit – pink is proven to be calming.
In a study by the American Institute of Biosocial Research found that when inmates of a prison looked at a flamingo pink card, their heart rate, pulse and breathing rate were reduced.
So, I am happy to say that the colour pink feels good.
My authentic voice giggles when I see the new homepage, and the logical side of me is calmed by a little science.
At the end of the day, if it feels good - if it feels light and exciting - it’s in line with your authentic self.
So I got my pink on.
